Une initiative pour renforcer l’attractivité scientifique de la France

Lancée le 18 avril 2025, l’initiative Choose France For Science vise à accueillir et attirer en France des chercheurs de très haut niveau. Elle leur offre la possibilité de poursuivre librement leurs travaux aux côtés de leurs collègues établis en France, en bénéficiant du dynamisme scientifique national et de moyens dédiés pour accompagner cette transition. Elle vient prolonger l’effort engagé avec la loi de programmation de la recherche, promulguée en 2020 et destinée à renforcer substantiellement les moyens des laboratoires.

Portée par le ministère de l’Enseignement supérieur, de la Recherche et de l’Espace, et opérée par l’Agence nationale de la recherche (ANR) dans le cadre de France 2030, cette initiative s’inscrit au cœur de la stratégie d’attractivité et de diplomatie scientifique de la France.

This was really the first opportunity to think that maybe I could work and teach and have another research team in France. My name is Alka Patel, I do research on architecture and the history of architecture. In South Asia, it means the Indian subcontinent, but it also includes Afghanistan to Bangladesh and also Sri Lanka. I have known for a long time, that there are problems for research, especially for travel. For example, it was practically impossible to travel to Cuba and also to Iran. This is a really significant obstacle. The most interesting thing to me is the connections between architectural traditions, across the regions of Eurasia, meaning the Iranian world, of course, along with India. We need to go to the regions with architectural remains to document and study them but it was always difficult, and for all researchers working on the Islamic world, for example, it is practically impossible.
There is always a contrast between the scientific world in the United States and in France. I would say that currently, it's also about broadening horizons for my students who have very recently completed their PhD. It offers them new opportunities. Now, they are seriously looking at post-docs and other contracts here in Europe, and especially in France. Of course, for my career, it's an opportunity to strengthen ties with colleagues here in France. French research is done in a completely different spirit. Projects are more collaborative. We always think in terms of a team, and I appreciate the spirit of community. It had been a long time since I had much light, I mean, and I didn't have much optimism in the United States. I was fortunate to have done a lot of research, to have had opportunities, and I still recognize them. But it wasn't a bright future. And if I see broader horizons, that's a positive thing.

Kartik Sheth : The story begins on 10 March 2025, completely out of the blue. I was deputy chief scientist at NASA when we received a message announcing that our entire department, that of the chief scientist and that of technology, policy and strategy, was being abolished. These two major structures were responsible for
advising the administrator on all aspects of science and technology. Receiving such news came as a real shock. The biggest challenge was that, overnight, I found myself unemployed and didn't know how I would be able to continue my work. The Choose France for Science programme and the Safe Place for Science programme in Marseille are two wonderful opportunities for me to continue my research.

My name is Kartik Sheth. Until recently, I was Deputy Chief Scientist at NASA, where I worked on astrophysics and Earth sciences. Before joining the government ten years ago, I had a long academic career that lasted nearly twenty years. I was an astrophysicist and my great passion was studying the evolution of galaxies.

Galaxies are the fundamental building blocks of the Universe. We live in the Milky Way galaxy. The question is: how did this galaxy come into being? When did the first galaxies form? How have they changed over time, and how did we get to where we are today? To study all this, I work on barred spiral galaxies. I don't know if you're familiar with Star Wars, but imagine a TIE fighter. A barred spiral galaxy looks like a TIE fighter. There is a bar of stars in the centre and spiral arms at each end. Today, we know that two-thirds of known galaxies are barred spiral galaxies.

But what did they look like in the past? This is important because the presence or absence of this bar indicates the maturity or age of a galaxy. So we did a lot of work with the Hubble Space Telescope, the Spitzer Telescope and ground-based telescopes. In 2008, I had to stop my research because that was the limit of what Hubble could observe. Then, two years ago, the Ariane rocket launched the James Webb Space Telescope. It's an extraordinary moment to go back 7 billion years, to the beginning of time, and understand how the first galaxies formed. The second part of my research focuses on star formation. One of the most fundamental processes in the evolution of the universe is the transformation of gas into stars. To observe this phenomenon, we use radio telescopes such as the Atacama Large Millimetre Array and the Square Kilometre Array. France is participating in both projects. Thanks to these telescopes, we are studying the gas and dust from which stars and planets are born. This has been a major part of my research in the past, and I hope to continue it when I arrive in France.

It offers me tremendous initial support, which will enable me to build a team with students and postdoctoral researchers. It also provides the means to organise scientific meetings between the United States, France, Europe, Asia and Africa, so that we can come together and advance international science. I am also very enthusiastic about the idea of living in another country. Travelling back and forth, learning French, discovering French culture and drawing inspiration from it is exciting.

When I talk to my French colleagues, I really appreciate their approach to work-life balance. At my age, family is essential. So I appreciate the flexibility of the French and European systems.

Stephen Griffies : La science en France est de renommée mondiale. L’offre faite via le programme Choose France for Science est vraiment formidable. Cela offre une immense liberté pour faire la science que je souhaite, que je trouve importante. et me permet de collaborer avec de nombreuses personnes ici en France et ailleurs. Je m’appelle Stephen Griffies Je travaille en physique océanique théorique et numérique, c’est-à-dire l’étude des mouvements de l’océan, comment il circule et ses interactions avec le système climatique mondial. Le premier endroit où j’ai travaillé pendant environ 30 ans, était un laboratoire appelé le Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory à Princeton, dans le New Jersey. Selon moi, ce laboratoire est le meilleur au monde dans ce qu’il fait. Mais hélàs, je pense que la plupart des gens ont vu les infos... Ces derniers temps, il a été plutôt difficile de mener des recherches créatives, motivées par la curiosité, et même des missions recherche scientifique aux États-Unis. Surtout en ce qui concerne le climat et le réchauffement planétaire, qui ne sont plus vraiment des questions, en soi, on sait que c’est en train d’arriver. Les vraies questions, sont : dans quelle mesure, jusqu’à quel point, et où exactement ? Et d’autres points qu’on essaie de comprendre de la planète et du réchauffement. Alors j’ai quitté le gouvernement et décidé de chercher ailleurs. Des collègues en France m’ont contacté et m’ont encouragé à postuler au programme Choose France for Science, ce que j’ai fait. J’ai eu la chance d’être accepté. L’une de mes convictions en tant que scientifique, c’est que la meilleure façon de faire de la science, c’est de laisser les scientifiques s’auto-organiser, avec un certain encadrement, des orientations, mais en choisissant eux-mêmes les problématiques. Et inévitablement, les prix Nobel, les meilleures découvertes, toutes les plus grandes avancées, je crois, sont nées de la science motivée par la curiosité L’étude de la Terre, des océans, de l’atmosphère et du climat, il reste encore tant de questions fondamentales à résoudre pour comprendre ce qui se passe sur notre planète, comment et où les changements pourraient survenir, leur ampleur, leur chronologie. Toutes ces questions sont incroyablement complexes à aborder. Il nous faut donc plus de science. Il faut soutenir la science. C’est pourquoi je me sens extrêmement privilégié de pouvoir y contribuer ici, en France.
