Alka Patel is Professor Emerita of architecture and art history at the University of California. Through the Amidex Foundation's Safe Place For Science programme, which hosts American scientists unable to travel, she joined the Laboratoire d'Archéologie Médiévale et Moderne en Méditerranée (LA3M), a joint research unit of Aix-Marseille University and the CNRS (French National Centre for Scientific Research). There, she coordinates the Indo-Persian-Continuum research project.
Her research focuses on Indian culture and its links with Iran and Central Asia. Like all researchers studying the Islamic world, she was confronted early on with the inability to travel to Iran or Afghanistan for geopolitical reasons. These working conditions made field research and document study difficult, forcing her to travel to these regions on her own and illegally.
Before joining Aix-Marseille University, Alka Patel had already established connections with French research colleagues in Paris and in the south of France. She received a research grant during a residency at the INHA in Paris in 2023.
This contract within the Aix-Marseille University laboratory allows her to build her own team and pursue multidisciplinary work.
